I found that there's no easy way to force a full download of the address book from the server (and it does happen than the local address book goes out of sync, e.g., if you use sogo-tool to remove duplicates).
The only way I found is to both remove the abook file and to edit prefs.js to remove every reference to it (both things are to be done with thunderbird not running), then it will download a fresh copy from the server.
