How are you installing the ZEG? VMware or Virtualbox?

Virtualbox

You can specify how many network adapters, and which kind, are used in the virtual system in either VMware or Virtualbox, and you can specify NAT or Bridged (bridged works best for me)

Yes, I have no problem with that. By default it is bridged, which is the the way I have all my other vms.

As for Ubuntu, check out "/etc/network/interfaces" for the NICs and IPs
Ubuntu is the host. On my laptop (with a gui), I am able to edit the interfaces file, and that is how I changed the interface to static and gave it an IP. But still cannot ping or ssh to it.

You should be able to import the ZEG appliance into either VMware or Virtualbox and login directly with the default user "sogo" and default password "sogo"
Yes, I can do that on the instance on my laptop, but not the instance on my headless Ubuntu server as there is no way that I know of to connect to it other than ssh, and for that I need an IP.

Like I said in my first post I am a bit new to all this and have set up my vms previously on servers with guis, allowing me to access the vm from the VirtualBox Manager, so the problem of no IP to ssh has not been an issue. I simply go in via the VirtualBox Manager and set the IP to whatever I want, and from then on no problem. Here is where I seem to be missing something! So subsequently I tried setting up the ZEG vm on my laptop, and as reported in earlier posts could then set the ip to static in /etc/networks/interfaces, but still cannot connect to it - no ping, no ssh...

I really think I must be missing the obvious here!!

Thanks

John

VMware allows you to access it via a console.

Hi Steve, thanks for the suggestion.
The only rule in that file was one starting with SUBSYSTEM=='net'. Not not sure if that is what you meant - it did reference et* and eth0, within it. Anyway I deleted it. After rebooting the problem remains. The file had been rebuilt with exactly (as far as I could see) the same line.

Any further ideas would be appreciated...

John
