Hi Heather, to complete all the other answers (and correct me if I’m wrong), the web interface is mainly inspired from Thunderbird but it’s only a design and functional choice. It’s not running any Thunderbird’s code. You can/should read more about it on their website : http://www.sogo.nu/about/technology.html
They have a plugin to enhance Thunderbird’s features with an additional shared address book and a shared calendar (using Lightning).
