I had the same problem. The log filed showed that the a column is missing
in the database
"Unknown column 'c_hascertificate' in 'field list'"
Updating the database to version 4.0 with the update script solved this.

I've just discovered that all my users can't read there contacts anymore.
The gui just tries on reading them but nevers stops (green floating box).
Any idea?
