Thanks for the explanation. Sharing works fine in the SOGo web client. I
was just not understanding the interface!

You first should subscribe those address books in SOGo web interface, in
order to check, if you really can use them as expected.
You do that in your account by switching to the address book view.
Then for each shared address book do the following.
On the left side press the plus sign behind "Subscriptions".
Type (partly) the email address of the user sharing this address book to
you.
There will be a list of matching users.
Choose the one you need.
This will unfold a list of address books from that user you have
privileges for.
Choose the all you want and click the "Subscribe" button after them.
Now you can check, if you can see and probably edit or delete those
address cards in those address books.
Apple uses as far as I know only one address book per account, so no
shared ones possible there.
I don't know eM Client.

In my testing with Apple’s Contacts, eM Client and SOGo’s web interface,
I am unable to view shared address books as an authenticated user.
In eM Client I can see the user’s Personal and Shared address books, but
they contain the same things, a mix of LDAP users and users added via
SOGo’s web interface.
In Apple’s Contacts (on Big Sur) I can’t see anything. I read a 2020
report that Big Sur introduced problems with CalDAV. Is it still the
case that this has not been resolved?
In SOGo, I can only see the user’s own address books and not the one I
am trying to share.
