you might want to make sure all the prerequisite Perl modules are installed and upto date.
mailScanner has had some similar issues which where (I think, only two coffees so far this morning) caused by the MIME modules.
If you can't get any further I'll try and dig out more info, but I'd start with makeing sure all the modules are latest versions.
