don't get me wrong but that is just stupid

a website was enver, is not and will never be a prerequisite for a
mail-domain (or mail subdomain) nor is it a MX record and if you
*really* enforce that any sending domain needs a website at the same URL
please refrain from maintain mailservers for the sake of mail-users

I don't enforce that for customers, but then again, my customers aren't
accepting email on their domains for MY company, they are accepting it
for THEIR company.

I think you badly misunderstand. Badly.

I am not saying a website should be a prereq for receiving mail on a domain name nor is it a substitute for an MX - or a proper whois
record for that matter.

BUT, it is certainly something that is done by ANYONE who is NOT interested in CONCEALING who they are.

If a customer were to contact us and say:

"I want you to setup a domain name that we can quote-unquote "receive"
mail on, but I want our real name concealed in the whois record and I
do not want an HTTP referral on the domain name to refer to a website for us - and indeed we don't have a website"

I would tell them to blow it out their ass.

Because, virtually the ONLY REASON that someone wants to do this kind of thing is if they want to do something on the Internet that is illegal or highly immoral.

At least, illegal IN THE UNITED STATES and in much of Europe. Fortunately, I do NOT derive money from any customer in Red China or North Korea or someplace like that where their own government is gunning for them. And what I say does not apply in those countries.

But in any Free country, the are PLENTY of opportunities for a "whistleblower" or someone like that with a LEGITIMATE need to conceal themselves, to send email FOR FREE and WITHOUT INVOLVING ME.

They can go find some StarFlucks or MackyWhopper place and get themselves onto a free wifi then create a fake name on Hotmail or whatever, and send their stuff out that way.

Then when it turns out that what they are sending is stalking emails to some young nubile 17 year old co-ed, and the police start getting involved and sending subponeas, they will be bothering StarFlucks and MackyWhopper who might just decide that it isn't that good of an idea to allow any Tom Dick and Harry to get on their wifi.

Getting back to MY operation - and the operations of most of the people here - we are in business to MAKE MONEY.

The MORE people who know who we are THE BETTER.

We make money by SERVICING CUSTOMERS. And that means HELPING THEM and THEIR FRIENDS who are trying to communicate with them.

If one of my customers has a business associate or a friend or whoever who is attempting to SEND THEM MAIL and it's FAILING then FOR DAMN SURE I want a call from that associate asking why. So I can fix the problem, help my customer's friend or associate. So I'm gonna plaster my contact info ANYWHERE that even an ignorant user can find it.

You sir, obviously don't view email like this.

I frankly don't know WHAT you view email as but FOR SURE it's NOT anything I want to be part of.

Ted
