Agreed. It's a good pointer since I never paid attention to it before.
Interestingly in submitting that it suggested

which says template tags can't have underscores, and is still marked as
new. It does fit the basic description of the tags I'm struggling with
so it seems this may be the bug I was looking for.

I think you are definitely onto the issue. Assume with the regex
change, your tags worked?
Yep, I think there's still room for some clarification on the
documentation which I'll work on later but I now have something working.
