Or, learn what to expect from the tool you use... If I followed the thread correctly, the 'problem' involved was not expecting subversion to consider a directory rename as a change to everything below. If you know that subversion doesn't know/care about the location of what you think of as the 'project', you could simply position it so that you wouldn't need to rename the directories above the branches.
