The shale-tiles view handler is completely independent of Shale. It
just handles the transform of '.jsf' page requests to look for an
appropriately named Tile. Personally, I think it should be a project of
Tiles, not with Shale. Of course, it might belong with the JSF project
as much as with the Tiles project, but certainly not Shale, since it has
no Shale dependencies. Also, they are obviously not supporting it, as
it hasn't been updated in so long. However, it is very useful as we
needed it to make our JSF/Tiles project work (actually,
Struts-1/Struts-2/JSF/Tiles project).

With Ray's ViewHandler I get the much shorter but equally
un-instructive exception below. But researching all this on the
internet has me wondering if the end result will be worth all the
trouble. I've used Tiles many times in the past with Struts 1 & 2 and
it's proved invaluable, but from what I understand, because of the way
JSF processes pages I have the choice of giving up most of the power
of Tiles or making my JSF unreadable. I understand that JSF 1.2
should solve many of these problems, but we're not there yet. I'm
wondering if anyone has been able to get a simple JSF/Tiles
application working (without needing something in between like Struts
or Portlets). Thanks.
