So back to a divide and conquer approach I think. I just created a trivial "example" [1] and it works as expected (i.e. no exception was generated) (on the same servers I was testing the complex JAR file) -- so possibly something else modifying the behaviour -- a JAR on the classpath, or something in the JSP file...
