This is something we should definitely do something about. The amount of
work and expertise required to maintain the various Tomcat builds should
be financially compensated, at least to some non-trivial degree. Doesn't
Apache have a program or framework for this?
Financial compensation? No. The ASF has a long standing policy of not
paying for development.
What would actually be far more useful to the Tomcat community than cash
is engineer time dedicated to the project. The entry level is testing
release candidates when they are announced. Finding out about any
regressions a few days before the release is much more useful (and less
work to fix) than finding out a day or two afterwards.
More frequent testing than just when release votes are announced would
be even more useful.
After that, time (anything from a few hours a week upwards) dedicated to
the project. Working on new tests, bugs fixes, new features,
documentation, etc.
