I think you can do something like this in RequiredBorder#renderAfter:

AjaxRequestTarget target = AjaxRequestTarget.get();
if (target == null) {
  // we're in a normal request
  // put logic of the original renderAfter here
}

not sure if that works, but you might wanna give that a try.
