Here is a possible solution *now*:

portletLike.add(new AbstractTransformerBehavior() {
  @Override public CharSequence transform(Component c, CharSequence output)
{
     try {
       c.internalRenderComponent();
     } catch (Exception x) {
       return "default result";
     }
   }
});

Something like this should do it.
