Adding java to the path did the trick. I guess it would be worth adding a message about this to the start routine, if java is not found. Every time that I started xwiki via the provided shortcut, I'd just see the cmd window open and close in a blink. There was no time to read anything like a fail message, if the console provided one. And I thought that was normal for xwiki.
