I’ve tried it and pressed suppr when the cursor was after 3 and I got:

1 2 34 5 6

But no grey background.

What browser and what version are you using? I tried with Chrome 46.0.2490.71 
at http://playground.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/TestDelete
