perhaps all that is required is this: when a page is requested, check the parents all the way up, and if you find a parent that is hidden, don’t show the page.

Although it might be quite complex to implement since we’d need to query the whole hierarchy just to know if a page is hidden or not). Unless we recursively set all children pages to hidden when you set a parent to hidden and thereafter when the user creates a page inside a nested hidden one, the hidden checkbox would be on by default (not shown for simple users). In any case, it’s worth creating a jira issues (of type “idea”) to record the idea. I’m renaming this issue to discuss the idea.
