Hi, The Zeppelin 0.6.0 might be a bit outdated indeed.
For the GSOC, the part with HighCharts, Google Chart etc, was a pre-phase to understand how we could make a common base to use multiple graph library. The scope of GSOC was drastically reduced considering the difficulty of the tasks, and a few discussions on how to package apps and pluggable content at that time. The final outcome of GSOC is 2 PR: a map visualization ( https://github.com/apache/incubator-zeppelin/pull/152) and Data validation on graphs (https://github.com/apache/incubator-zeppelin/pull/262). There is no current work on pluggable visualization at the moment since we are working on how to package and plug apps/plugins first. One thing to keep in mind also is possible license problems with HighChart.
