Director-General's Response to the FCTC Public
 Hearings
English -RTF format
Franais -RTF format

"The World Health Organization (WHO) will conduct two days of public
hearings on the proposed Framework Convention on Tobacco Control from 12-13
October 2000. The hearings, a first in WHO's history, will take place from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Geneva International Conference Centre, Geneva,
Switzerland."

Dear sir, madam,

I am a non smoker and therefore I support what you are doing in the field of
smoking. What I do not support is the imposition of outdated things on your
international readers, only because these things are being used in Britain
and the USA. It is about the am/pm time format which you use in
your announcements, like the one cited above. I do not want to see this
medieval leftover spread around the globe.
This form is suited better to international announcements:

The hearings, a first in WHO's history, will take place from 0:800 to 20:00
hours, at the Geneva International Conference Centre, Geneva, Switzerland.

This is according to the international standard ISO 8601. The WHO is an
international body, so please use international standards. The British and
the Americans can just as well learn to understand this way of telling and
writing times (and dates).

Please stop supporting such non-international standards and formats,

H. Maenen, The Netherlands
