This seems strange to me. When I was in Britain a few years ago, I
heard metres being used in speech all the time, including my older
people that I would ask directions of.
And while official road signs are in yards, almost all the private
signs erected along the highways are in metres, so it would be hard to
argue that drivers are not used to seeing metres on road signs.
