TOKYO (Reuters) - Wisdom comes with age but the odd glass of wine may also
give senior citizens a boost in brain power.

Those over 40 who drink moderate amounts of wine or Japanese sake rice wine
scored better in IQ tests than teetotalers and heavy drinkers, said a study
conducted by Japan's national aging research center and published in
Saturday's Tokyo Shimbun.

"Alcohol protects certain brain functions against the aging process which
means it has some influence on intelligence as well," researchers were
reported as saying.

In a four-year study conducted on about 2,000 people by the center, people
who typically drank about one to three glasses of wine, or similar amounts
of sake, a day had average IQ scores of 108.0 for men and 106.2 for women.

Non-drinkers were at 104.7 for men and 103.7 for women, while heavy drinkers
had the lowest IQ scores, the study said. It did not specify.

Researchers said they plan to widen their study to see if moderate drinkers
of other types of alcohol, such as gin or beer, scored better than
non-drinkers and heavy drinkers.
