I was at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) last week. As
is common these days, there was a template for how big a carry-on bag could
be in the public area in front of the ticket counters. This particular one
was supplied by British Airways and what was unique about it was that it had
an integral spring scale so you could weigh your carry-on bag as well as
check size. The scale was in KILOGRAMS only. Weight limits were posted for
various types of aircraft, such as the Concorde; the weight limits were
metric first with WOMBAT in parenthesis e.g. 6 kg (13 pounds), all rounded
values.

Also in wandering around waiting for my flight, I read a placard on one of
the America West gates that displayed prohibited and dangerous items that
could not be transported unconditionally by air. The only exact quantity
specified (some things were like "no compressed gasses, except small
quantities as personal toiletries") was sporting ammunition, which was
limited to 5 kg (as cargo), no WOMBAT equivalents.

Slow but steady progress.
