I sent this letter to my computer magazine. The subject line was: Why should we haver to use CFM?
Op p. 24 van het februarinummer las ik dat de capaciteit van computerventilatoren wordt uitgedrukt in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Alleen maar omdat de Amerikanen met middeleeuwse meeteenheden werken moeten wij die dus maar invoeren? Wij hebben geen cubic feet nodig, wij kunnen het af met de kubieke decimeter. Ik heb meer dan genoeg van dat langzame binnendringen van Amerikaanse eenheden. Wij hebben ons ook laten wijsmaken door anti-metrieke marketeers dat de afmetingen van diskettes in inch moeten worden uitgedrukt (terwijl ze in werkelijkheid 90 mm exact meten), dat de diagonaal van beeldschermen in inch moet worden gemeten, printer resolutie in dpi etc. En waarom? Alleen maar omdat dat Amerikaans is. Vandaag of morgen kan iemand voorstellen de Fahrenheitschaal in te voeren omdat de Amerikanen daarmee temperaturen meten of afstanden en snelheden in miles, resp. miles per hour gaan meten, ook al omdat de Amerikanen dat doen. Ik vind het gebruik van Amerikaanse eenheden in metrieke landen krankzinnig, het is niets dan een terugkeer naar de Middeleeuwen. Is het niet de hoogste tijd daarmee op te houden? We zijn tenminste al van die idiote papierformaten als 11 of 12" * 210 mm verlost en zijn naar A-formaten teruggekeerd. Nu de rest nog. De inches, dpi, CFM, etc, etc. H. Just because the Americans work with medieval measuring units, they should be adopted here? We have no use for the cubic foot, we can do very well with the dm3. I am fed up with this slow invasion of American measuring units. We also allowed anti-metric marketeers to fool us into accepting that the sizes of screens and diskettes ought to be expressed in inches (while the real size of a diskette is 90 mm) and printer resolution in dpi etc. And what for? Just because this is done in the USA. Somebody could just as well, for the same reason, propose that we adopt the Fahrenheit scale and distances and speeds in miles and miles per hour on our roads. I regard the use of US units in metric countries as madness, a reversal to the Dark Ages. Isn't the time long overdue to end this? At least we got rid of these crazy paper sizes of 11 or 12" * 210 mm and reverted to A-sizes. Now for the rest. The inches, dpi, CFM, etc. Yours, etc.
