Gene, you ask some great, provocative (in the literal sense) questions
here.

Your second paragraph can be expanded to add that this is already the
case in Japan and the Republic of Korea ("South Korea"). Australia may
or may not allow parethetical statements on containers in non-metric
units (which would be considered non-legal if allowed, I'm sure) but
they too require metric content statements. Perhaps Pat Naughtin can
tell us if such "extraneous" markings would be grounds for legal action.
