You're right about "centre."

However, the use of "theatre" is very widespread. In California, it's almost
universal. In other states, it appears to be the predominant spelling, by
quite a wide margin.

Keep in mind the international spelling ie: centre and theatre,
in the US, is used very sporadically, and when it is used it's
usually because it is eye catching and or it invokes an
international flavour.
