John makes a good point.

As a start, is it possible that we could persuade the powers that be to
require that all (that is *ALL*) measuring devices sold in the US after a
date certain would be required to have metric scales or readouts; that, for
the time being, they could also have Olde English scales or readouts, too,
but that it must be equally easy to read either one (by having dual scales
or switchable readouts).

Of course, in the first few years of such a law, (1) few new measuring
devices would be bought (compared the the vast number already in use), and
(2) most people woudl still be using the old ones,
BUT ...
at least metric measuring devices would gradually get into the hands of all,
eventually, so that when the opportunity or necessity arises to use metric
they would have the tools at hand to do so. And those of us who wish to use
metric even now would not be forced to scavange for devices with metric
readouts.

As long as pound scales and inch rulers abound and continue to
be made, FFU will never be replaced by SI, even if every product is labelled
solely in SI.
