Madan, be careful designating "the only unit of mass in metric system": The kilogram is the *only* "unit of mass" in SI. Gram is a submultiple of the kilogram (1 g = 1/1000 kg) in SI, "the metric system" since 1960. In earlier times, when cgs units were the basis of "the metric system" before MKSA units were suggested by Giorgi in about 1900, and before SI (derived from MKSA) was formally defined by the CGPM in 1960, the gram might have been accurately called "the only unit of mass in the metric system" but that assertion is no longer true.
