I have rejoined the list after a long period in which I chose to dedicate myself to
other subjects for a change.

Unfortunately, everywhere I go I encounter the good old American hobby of making a
mockery of every possible international standard.

I will attempt make it short:

I started by gathering more information on satellite reception as I wanted to switch
to some satellite service which may be able to bring me more diversity than the usual
propaganda on cable.

To make a paranthesis here: I strongly recommend (to those intersested ), the
reception of Telstar5 which is owned by Globecast (www.globecast.com) which is a
division of France Telecom and is the sole broadcaster in NA of Euronews (Eng, Fre,
Ger, Ita, Rus, Spa) as well as GermanTV which is a compilation of the major German
broadcasters (ARD, ZDF, DW).

For those who are interested to learn more about the (what I found it to be)
interesting field of the TV/Sat standards you will find a very comprehensive and not
too scientific description at:

http://www.coolstf.com/mpeg/

Finally, for those who are not interested but would like me to get to the point with
this posting, I am copying a phrase from the text at the above web-site.

=====snip=====
"ATSC is Advanced Television Systems Committee which is destined to replace NTSC as
the method of terrestrial television transmissions in the United States, Canada,
Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan. Like DCII, ACTS uses the MPEG-2 video specification,
but bastardizes everything else, making North American (and South Korea/Taiwan) an
island in a world of standards."
=====snip====

Sounds familiar? It seems there are more people in this country who share the opinion
that, American patriotism has nothing to do with sticking to colloquial standards.
