It is true that Americans are very dependent on their cars.  One reason is
that the United States has a lower population density than most of Europe.
On the other hand, public transportation is currently being promoted and
expanded in many urban areas.  Salt Lake City has a new TRAX light-rail
system that has been used very heavily (by all socioeconomic classes).  It
was finished within budget, ahead of schedule, and it is being used more
than was predicted.  TRAX is very popular and many extensions are being
planned.  I have read that similar things are happening in other places
around the country.

I personally use a bike and public transportation extensively, because it is
cheaper, it is fun to bike, and it is quite adaquate for my needs.
