VHS tapes don't make "perfect" copies, but as a result they don't bring with them unacceptable legal rules that force equipment to be built with copy-protection and/or forced incompatibility with old hardware. The "superiority" of DVDs, and of DTV in *any* format, is just not worth the rights we have to give up to switch to them.
