For the same reason America has adopted the DMCA and NET Act: Hollywood is spending megabucks to force conversion to formats that aren't compatible with any existing ones because it allows them to take away our rights to fair use. Once this changeover is complete, it will be impossible to record any show unless the content owners feel like letting you record it (not darned likely). I urge everyone to boycott digital TVs and DVDs, and demand that governments stop the forced changeover to digital TV unless the laws are changed so that digital TV will no longer carry with it the end of fair use.
