Actually, It's Sakkakawea, not Sacagawea (and absolutely not Sacajawea) - because of how the Hidatsa language transliterates into English.

Sacagawea is acceptable only if pronounced Sah-kah-gah-wee-a, (note the similarity to Sah-kah-kah-wee-a), and not - NOT Sack-a-juh-weigh-a (aka Sacajawea) as apparently pronounced by the uninformed.

Basically - Sakkakawea is closer to the pronunciation without leaving room for error.

In North Dakota, we have a Lake named "Sakkakawea" and the particular spelling is used in general reference.

Like the Loony, the Sacagawea dollar is a different color from the quarter.

And will save the government -- the taxpayers -- $450 million a year, once the dollar bill is discontinued.  As Everett Dirksen said, "A million here, and a million there, and pretty soon you're talking real money."
