Chris, Carleton and all,

You have to remember that many Britons are still paranoid about Germany
taking over Britain.

Those who were bombed as a child in W.W.II  (and my ex-wife is one) still
have nightmares.

These are the LAST people in the world who want a German (or Austrian)
person opening up a bier-keller in their country and using their measures
to sell to their kin-folk, i.e. litres.

Younger people might be a little more tolerant.

Hence the resistance to metricate in the UK.
