I did not realise until after I posted this
that the article printed in the Plain Dealer was heavily edited and many parts
cut out. Here is something of interest:
One thing the satellite is set to transport is a compact disc containing
the names of people who have purchased land on the moon from Dennis Hope, who
laid claim in a clever entrepreneurial move to all the known planets and moons
in 1980.
Since then, he has been busy selling land on those celestial
bodies for $19.99 an acre. He's also been selling space on the disc that will be
sent on the first mission.
The first paragraph did appear in the PD,
but the second did not. Here it is, you can now own acres of land
somewhere in space. Not hectares, not square metres, not even square
kilometres, but good old American acres.
Metricating the US may be one challenge
keeping FFU out of space will be another.

Here is the same article that appeared in
the LA Times:
You may have to register to view it, but
it is free to register.

Moon

This morning the Cleveland Plain Dealer
ran an article by J. Michael Kennedy of the Los Angeles
Times. Apparently an American company based in San Diego is
planning a moon mission and has recently signed a 40 M$ contract with
the Russian Space company Kosmotras to launch a rocket to the moon by next
October.
Anyone interested can send along
greetings at 2.5 k$/g. The rocket will also carry a list of people who
have stalked claims to acreage on the lunar surface.
Since the rocket will be launched
Kazakhstan one wonders if this project will be metric either fully or in
part. The article doesn't state who is building the rocket, but if it
is done outside the US the chances are great that it will be metric.
One wonders if humans do successfully return to the moon permanently, will
SI be the only legal system to be used on the moon or elsewhere in
space? Or will the US try to export FFU to the stars.
Here is the companies
website:
