The problem here is that each bottler uses different sizes. Coke HQ in Atlanta. I do
not think, prescribes what size bottles the bottlers should use. Some areas use the
500 ml size but some do not, it depends on the bottler. If we could get Coke (and
Pepsi for that matter) to mandate standard bottle sizes this would help but I don't
think it would happen. This is probably why we are stuck with 1 l and 2 l large sizes
but 20 oz and 12 oz small sizes. I hope the 500 ml sizes is a trend. Fortunately the
industry changes packaging so much that eventually, we can hope, they will get it
right.

My mother let me borrow some shampoo for my daughter, it was an unknown brand
(although not a discount one). The bottle was labeled 400 ml in large type first with
the English equivalent in parenthesis. The shampoo, contrary to what I thought, was
made in the USA. A different brand of conditioner was labeled 500 ml in parenthesis
after the English equivalent but it was still hard metric. Although they spelled color
"Colour" there was no indicating the product was imported. These were not from our new
ally, Procter and Gamble.

Finally, I was at a party this weekend and two guys were chatting about bicycles. They
build their own. The conversation concentrated on the length of the hub (or some such
thing - I'm not into biking that much). They spoke entirely in "mm". When I asked,
they said that all bicycles us metric (except of course that kids bikes still refer to
their size in inches). At least the serious bikers know the correct way to measure.

you seem to be the one with the luck. Maybe you can contact them again and inquire
about why coke in the US is sold in a 591 mL bottle and everywhere else it is 600 mL?
Also, Coke's other sizes are hard metric, why not this one?

This size is more popular with the public then the 500 mL size. So, it would really
be a victory if they would change this one.

  Subject: [USMA:23690] Small Coke bottles

After having written to the Coca Cola company in Atlanta some months ago, I saw new
smaller bottles of Coke labeled as 500 mL in large print on the upper part of the
label. No more ".5 Liter" nonsense!

Small victory, but it shows that they will listen to knowledgeable people. I told
them I was a member of the U.S. Metric Association when I wrote to them.
