Even the newest cartridges (e.g., the 17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (0.172" bullet diameter), a very popular cartridge just introduced a year or so ago) are often in colloquial units.
The firearms industry is in the same condition as the printing industry: centuries of historical measurement baggage and very little metrication.
