Terry, I think they just rounded it.  I noticed they did the same thing for
the cubic inch about half a page later.  As far as I can tell, the U.S.
gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, which means you can calculate the exact
conversion if necessary, based on the definition of the inch.

I have been researching US non-metric definitions.

Handbook 130 says a US gallon is 231 cubic inches.

There is a small difference between the two values. Is the US gallon
precisely defined in terms of cubic inches or liters?
