My biggest concern with this relates to changing the speed limit signs. If I recall correctly, international speed limit signs are a white circle with a red border, and the maximum speed printed on the white circle. If that were implemented in the US at the same time as metrication, then I think it would be too tempting for some anti-metric people to paint a diagonal stripe across the new signs as a protest. I agree that it would be good to introduce international road signs in the US, but only once metric speed limits are well entrenched and in common usage.
