Jim Elwell asked in USMA 26158:

We are designing a new terminal that will have some hand and/or shoulder straps on the sides for the user. These will need to be removable, and will vary a bit from customer to customer.

The obvious way of doing this is a threaded hole, similar to what is on the bottom of most cameras, where a machine screw with a large, knurled head goes through a grommet on the strap and screws into the case.

Unfortunately, the threaded hole on the bottom of cameras is a 1/4-20 (quarter inch diameter, 20 threads per inch). This is a very, very common, and there are huge numbers and varieties of accessories designed for it.

Is anyone familiar with something similar, but metric, used on products in metric countries?

The answer is definitely yes. Unfortunately I have sold my Leica camera so I can't answer prcisely, but the bore is larger and the thread is coarser. German cameras sold in English-speaking countries have an adapter screwed in position.
