I do the same, except that I shut it down when I go to the lab in the
daytime. When it's not running I have it set to run dialup server
(Win2k) so I can dial in and retrieve a file I might have forgotten.

I'm not sure that makes sense to me.

I have a dial-up connection. However, my ISP (Coastal Web Online) has no
usage limits (for less than $15/mo) and I use my second phone line, so I
remain connected all the time (with automatic redialing taking place
when the occasional uncontrolled disconnect occurs). As a result, I
often get the little pop-up message from the Systray area (right side of
task bar), telling me updates are ready to be installed.
