Canadian Motor Vehicle safety regulations do not mandate
that speedometers & odometers in cars for the Canadian
market display anything other than km/h & km (respectively).

That being said, the speedometers of most cars sold in Canada
do have both both km/h and mph (with the km/h being the larger
numbers).

Keep in mind that the majority of the population of Canada
lives within 150 km of the border, so there is a pretty high
possibility that a car owned in Canada will travel into the
United States at some time.  Having the mph on the dial
can be helpful, when driving on US highways.

Last year when I was in Montreal dealing with my 14 year old car's engine dying (for good) on the Champlain Bridge, I went to a Saab dealer to try to get it fixed.  I noted the speedometers on the new cars -- km only, NO mph.  At least for Saab, this has been the case in Canada for many years.  (The car that died, a 1988, had a speedo I bought from a parts place in Ontario, and even then, km/h only.)

The 1999 9-5 I bought from my repair shop here in Maryland has mph on the outside - green back-lit numbers, and km/h on the inside - orange back-lit numbers.  Unlike many other cars, where km/h is grudgingly included so small as to be invisible, on this car they are quite easy to discern.
