At the deli, to avoid using unpleasant units when asking for potato salad or the like, I just say "the medium container" or "the big container" or whatever -- that's what most people really want anyway, the container filled.  At Subway it's always "the small sandwich" or "the big sandwich" so I don't have to say "six inch" or "footlong".  It seems to work.
