Hi Terry, Your misunderstanding of the label makes a very nice pro-metric argument. The serving size is in fluid ounces, but the alcohol content is (probably) in avoirdupois ounces. Does it matter? Yes, 0.5 avoirdupois ounce of pure alcohol does not have a volume of 0.5 U.S. fluid ounces. Had metric units been used, this misunderstanding wouldn't have happened.
Everywhere ambiguous customary units are used, there is a chance that a unit will be misinterpreted. Often the error is harmless, but not always. John On Wednesday 17 December 2003 03:55, Terry Simpson wrote: > The proposed mandatory label mentions fluid ounces only.
