Hi John,

My NOAA nautical charts for the U.S. are in fathoms and feet, with fathoms in 
big numbers and the remaining feet written as a small subscript.  In other 
words, 33 feet would be written with a big 5 and a small 3.  Above 11 fathoms 
they drop the feet subscript.  Distance scales are in nautical miles and 
yards.

Pilot charts published by the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency give:
        temperature in degrees C
        pressure in millibars
        wind and current speeds in knots (nautical miles / hour)
        distances in nautical miles
        wave height information in FEET
