Years ago I became a Novice class amateur radio operator and was assigned the call sign WB1ELJ. Later, when I took the tests and upgraded to Advanced class, I did not bother applying for a change in call sign.
I have just applied for and received a "vanity" call sign, commensurate with my license class and appropriate to my call area. It is now WE4SI --- "We for SI". Silly, perhaps, but at $16.50 for 10 years I could afford it. Now I've got to dust off the ol' vacuum tubes, crank up the spark gap, connect to some barbed wire fence, and get on the bands to do some subtle advertising. Jim -- James R.
