??? Wait a minute here, please, Carl. I think you're being somewhat too harsh and "forgetting" about something I consider as very important, critical even!
Without realizing it, my friend, you're actually shooting down the efforts of people who believe in research as the fundamental backbone for progress!
If we stayed content with the state of things we inherited from our forefathers we'd never strive to do *better*!!!
Humankind is about the continuing quest for perfection, to disclose the secrets of the unknown, "to go where no man has gone before" (Star Trek)!
I want no part in a movement that thinks we've "reached the end of the line"! The day we start thinking like that is the day we'll be NO DIFFERENT from the current ifpists!
Fine, the SI system in its present form is "the way to go", but sure as hell it is NOT "the end of the line"! Curbing the efforts of those who are simply trying to get on with the natural course of mankind is uncalled for, and, quite frankly, the wrong attitude to cherish IMHO!

Marcus,
Promoting metric in the US means promoting the system that is in use in
the rest of the world. That is separate from changing the metric
system or the system by which we tell time. Confusing the two means
just makes efforts to convert the US will be less effective.
