Regarding Joe Reid:

Joe made his last postings to the listserver on 2004-02-05, just two weeks ago, the
last one being [USMA:28552]. His last messages were responses to some questions about
decimals and metricated recipes. He always had thoughtful and factual answers to
metric questions, often quoting the sources for his information. So you could depend
on him for straight answers not just opinions. Shortly after the USMA Web pages
stared in 1996, he contributed information, especially the pages on the simplicity of
decimals and the page on everyday metric units. He could simplify metric and make it
easy to understand, without all the complications that some want to impose. I often
asked him when I was looking for answers to questions that went farther back than my
involvement with metric. I had hoped to visit Joe someday when the opportunity arose.
To me he was Canada's Louis Sokol, in that he was a persistent and dedicated metric
activist, one to whom metric was a continuing activity until the end.
