When we would order meat in croatia we would say "20 deka, or 30 deka" and so on... deka being short for dekagram. Nobody had problems ordering like that. You don't have to use grams. In fact I never heard anyone using grams when ordering meat in butcher shop or in deli in Croatia. Always kile (kilogram) or deka (dekagram). It is sort of a slang the way it was (and still is) said.

Hello I have been doing some research on the sale of deli meats in the area where i live. i phoned a lot of different delies and they all price their sandwitch meats by 100 g. I asked them if they still get a lot of people asking for a pound of meat they all said yes. When a customer asks for a pound of meat they weigh out 450 g. I asked them if their is any problem with this, they all said know. The scales they use are metric only. I am very pro metric as you all know but i have to admit sometimes it is easier to say i want a pound of meat than 454 g or 500 g. I don't think it slaps SI in the face if somebody goes in to a store and asks for a pound of meat and the clerk weighs 450 g. When the deli meat is wrapped after the sale it says the weight in grams No ounces at all. John .
