I just noticed some markings on one of our plastic food containers (which
has no brand name on it).

On one side, it's marked at three levels -- 16 oz, 32 oz and 48 oz (which
should, of course, be 16 fl oz, 32 fl oz and 48 fl oz).

On the other side, where you'd expect to see 500 mL, 1000 mL and 1500 mL
(or, possibly 0.5 L, 1 L and 1.5L), it has 473 ml, 946 ml and 1419 ml.

I wouldn't even know how to explain the stupidity of those markings to
someone who's idiotic enough to design the container that way.

Rubbermaid containers (of which we have quite a few) are hard metric (e.g.,
1.2 L, 2.0 L), with rounded FFU volume equivalents (e.g., "8 cups, 2.1 Qt"
for the 2.0 L size), with no calibration on the side.
