Good luck on your experiment.

Maybe you can find a way to link the unit to something that they can see.
People that do not understand the metric system will only learn it with
context.

If you do not understand French and I just speak French to you, you will not
understand what I am saying. You will not learn the language that way and
may dismiss it as babble.

However, I could give you a coffee and say in French "caf", and then give
you sugar and say in French "sucre". You may then the associate the foreign
word with the real world. But even if you do not, you still have an idea of
what I am talking about.

Similarly, if you say "50 kilometers north of Missoula", some people will
not understand. People will not learn the units that way and may dismiss it
as babble.

However, you could show a picture of a teepee and say "It is 4 metres across
or just enough for two people end to end". The audience may then the
associate the metric unit with the real world. But even if they do not, they
still have an idea of what you are talking about.
